MISSION: To fly around the world in class record time On the contrary, the aircraft of Captain Riccardo Mortara was 30 years-old, a mainstream jet designed for comfort, and with its design harking back to the 1950s. The Sabreliner was the world’s first business jet, yet it fits into the same take-off weight class as the GlobalFlyer – though 80 percent of Fossett’s plane’s weight was fuel. On Mortara’s 37,000km mission around the globe, the crew would pre-plan ten fuel stops while the clock continued to tick. The crew, which included Riccardo’s son Gabriel and co-pilot Flavien Guderzo, was also out to hunt down golfer Arnold Palmer, who set a time of 57 hours 26 minutes back in 1978 in his Learjet 36 – a jet from a lighter weight category, and with superior range. Captain Mortara, 62, is an experienced private jet pilot and operator, and has absolute trust in his machine. This is a story of a man’s bond with his plane, of the thirst for adventure, and of father and son out to make history together. |
